ST. LOUIS -- After getting only 11 carries last week, Frank Gore never made a public stink about it. Coach Jim Harbaugh noted he wasnt the only unhappy player after the San Francisco 49ers lost their second straight game. But Gores touches went way up, and yards, too. And the offence kicked into gear in a 35-11 rout of the St. Louis Rams on Thursday night. "I didnt say nothing. I just want to win," Gore said. "The 49ers are all about winning. Whether its running or throwing, thats all were worrying about is winning." Gores first 100-yard game of the year more than doubled his output from the first three games. It helped the 49ers put their foot down without some of their biggest stars. Colin Kaepernick threw two touchdown passes and the defence stepped up, too. "We know the talent we have on this team," Kaepernick said. "We know what were capable of." Anquan Boldin had five catches for 90 yards and a touchdown, and Gore had 153 yards on 20 carries and a 34-yard score for San Francisco (2-2), which was outscored 46-10 the previous two games. NaVorro Bowman had two of the 49ers five sacks with a strip leading to Anthony Dixons fourth-quarter scoring run. "If we keep playing, our offence will come around sooner or later," Bowman said. The Rams (1-3) had an overtime win and tie against San Francisco last year, and took the early lead Thursday before falling flat. Greg Zuerlein banged in a 40-yard field goal off the right upright to end a nine-game scoring drought in the first quarter, but the 49ers answered with 28 straight points. "Tomorrows going to be a pretty tough day in the film room," Rams quarterback Sam Bradford said. "The good news is we have 10 days, 11 days until we play again and theres going to be ample time to get that corrected." St. Louis was held to 188 total yards and was completely stuffed on the run, with 18 yards on 19 carries. "Thats what we do," said safety Donte Whitner, who had an interception in the end zone. "We stop the run first, then we stop the pass and then we get away with wins." The 49ers came close to a Super Bowl title in February and regained their footing against the team that gave them the most trouble last season. Minus cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and linebackers Patrick Willis and Aldon Smith, they quieted a raucous, hopeful crowd, sending all but a few thousand home early. "Were going to have to get tough in here," Rams defensive end Chris Long said. "Were going to have to hold each other accountable and make plays and dig our way out of this hole because nobodys going to do that for us." Kaepernick had no touchdown passes and four interceptions the previous two weeks and completed fewer than 50 per cent of his passes. He was 15 for 23 for 167 yards. Boldin had a monster debut with the 49ers after helping the Ravens beat San Francisco in the Super Bowl, but had been quiet along with the rest of the offence the previous two weeks. He had two highlight catches in the second quarter, a 42-yarder despite Cortland Finnegan getting flagged for holding, and a 20-yard score capped by a dive into the end zone after barely avoiding the sideline. Gore was the second straight back to burn the St. Louis defence, with DeMarco Murray gaining 175 yards in Dallas 31-7 win Sunday. "Its disgusting," Long said. "It really is just disgusting." The Rams have trailed by double digits in every game, making up an 11-point deficit against Arizona in the opener but not gaps of 21 and 24 points against Atlanta and Dallas, and were down by 25 in the fourth quarter against San Francisco. They got hit by injuries, too, the worst of them when rookie safety T.J. McDonald was carted off with a leg injury in the second half. Bradford was 19 for 41 for 202 yards and an interception and has been sacked 11 times the last two games after the Rams allowed none the previous four games. After mustering just 25 yards in the first quarter, the 49ers took a noisy crowd out of it in the second, averaging more than 11 yards per snap while piling up 176 yards and two touchdowns. Kaepernick was 8 for 12 for 104 yards in the half, all but 11 of those yards in the second quarter. The Rams went for it on third-and-1 from the 49ers 34 and Whitners diving interception on a tipped ball in the end zone set up an eight-play, 80-yard drive capped by Gores 34-yard run on third-and-1 in the final minute that made it 14-3. The San Francisco defence took Gore off the hook for getting stripped by rookie Alec Ogletree and a turnover, forcing St. Louis into a three-and-out. Davis, who had been questionable with a because of a hamstring injury, broke open for an easy catch in the left side of the end zone to push the lead to 21-3. The Vancouver captain and his teammates were left stunned after Jose Mari scored a pair of goals three minutes apart in the second half as the Colorado Rapids came back to beat the Whitecaps 2-1 before a sellout crowd of 21,000 at B.C. Place Stadium on Saturday. "We all feel like we got punched in the gut a little bit there," said DeMerit. "Unfortunately, that happens in our sport. Some things you cant control. I thought the things we could control (were) enough to win. Unfortunately, that didnt happen tonight." It was the Whitecaps first loss of the young season. "Ultimately, its disappointing," said DeMerit. "I think everyone will walk out of B.C. Place tonight thinking like something got taken away from them." Mari scored in the 79th and 82nd minutes shortly after Matias Labas ejection for a second yellow card reduced Vancouver to 10 men. "It kind of hit us at the wrong time, too, when we think we had the game by the scruff of the neck and were controlling things," said DeMerit. "It was kind of a one-two punch there, and you find yourself on the back foot therea You have to say that the guys fought for 90 minutes tonight, even when we went down a man. We had enough chances to win." Laba was sent off in the 77th minute following his deliberate hand-ball as he fell and grabbed it to prevent a scoring chance. He had already received a yellow card for a foul in the 54th minute. A Colorado (2-1-1) player said a few words of reminder to referee Ioannis Stavridis, after he showed Laba another yellow card and the official pulled out a red one. Mari then sliced home a left-footed shot off the goalpost from the left flank. But to Millers chagrin, no penalty was called and the Rapids were awarded another goal-kick. Mattocks luck finally changed in the 67th minute as he outraced Colorado defender Drew Moor to a lead ball from Miller, raced in on goal and scored. Irwin got his hand on the shot, but could not keep the ball out. The goal resulted after Vancouver coach Carl Robinson had injected more speed into his lineup by inserting speedy substitutes Sebastian Fernandez (57th minute) and Kekuta Manneh (74th), providing even more opportunities off long balls that created many chances in the first half. "Obviously, when Im walking off with (about) 15 minutes to go with Manneh coming on, I could never have envisioned that we were going to lose that game," said Whitecaps striker Miller. "But, obviously, the red card had turned the game on its head." Robinson was contemplating a defensive change to help preserve the lead when Laba was ejected, but Mari struck for his quick markers. "The first one, especially, just gave us so much life," said Colorado captain Moor. The two Colorado goals prompted Robinson to make further goal-oriented substitutions instead, but they did not pay off. While the Whitecaps lamented a win that they felt got away, the Rapids gave themselves credit for their comeback a week after they had lost to Kansas City by allowing a late game-winning goal. Moor called the early-season win over a Western Conference rival "a good sign." "We want to play against teams," said Moor. "We dont want to sit in and come in on the road and hope to get a point, hope to get a tie. We want to go win games.
